When operating near the DIP joint — whether for mallet finger repair, distal phalanx fracture fixation, or nail bed injury — remember the TT inserts less than 1.5 mm from the germinal matrix; dissect precisely or risk iatrogenic nail bed damage.
The asymmetric ulnar-versus-radial thickness of lateral bands and the TRL also informs repair strategy: ulnar structures carry more tissue and are more likely to be reconstructible after injury.
