Cohen and Harris reconstructed the three-dimensional architecture of Haversian systems in the mid-femoral cortex of adult dogs using serial sectioning and wire/balsa modeling. The study asks: how are osteons spatially organized in three dimensions, and what does that organization mean mechanically and biologically?

Key Findings

Osteons course diagonally from periosteum to endosteum over ~1 cm while spiraling around the femoral axis — the spiral occupied at most one-tenth of the femoral circumference and was clockwise distally on the left femur, counterclockwise on the right
Individual osteons twist upon each other in the same rotational direction as the network spiral, producing a cable-like braided architecture that the authors link to cortical bone's anisotropic mechanical properties
Measurements of 100 osteon segments: mean length 480 µm (range 1–2100), largest cross-sectional area mean 7×10⁴ µm², Volkmann canal count mean 1 (range 0–8) — all with striking standard deviations reflecting structural heterogeneity
